EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T volleyball junior setter Edie Brewer (6-foot, West Chester, Ohio) secured her second career triple-double to earn Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) setter of the week honors. The Aggies had multiple honorees as sophomore middle hitter Shaylynn Hall (6-2, Garner, N.C.) was named the conference’s co-defensive player of the week, announced by the MEAC office on Monday.

Brewer recorded 94 assists, 35 kills with a .272 hitting percentage, 42 digs, six blocks and two service aces in four matches last week.  She averaged 6.71 assists, 2.50 kills, 3.00 digs and 0.43 blocks.

“Edie does a phenomenal job because she doesn’t just set for us,” N.C. A&T coach Hal Clifton said. “She comes back and serves and receives and she hits. She is one of the most versatile players that we have on our team. For her to be recognized as the setter of the week, says a lot for her.  She really did a good job running the offense this weekend, getting our hitters in places to be successful, delivering the right ball at the right time. 2019 Toronto Kawhi Jersey Leonard Patch Earned Red Raptors Nba Finals

“Her decision-making process is continuing to get better and better and that helps our offense to become more potent.  The smarter she gets at the setter position, the better off our offense is going to be,” Clifton concluded.

Earlier in the day, Brewer started the Wofford Invitational with a double-double with 18 assists and 16 digs with seven kills and two blocks at Wofford.  During the tournament, Brewer averaged 7.18 assists, 3.36 digs, 2.36 kills and 0.36 blocks.

Hall recorded 13 blocks and nine kills with a hitting percentage of .467 last week and averaged 1.08 blocks.

“We’ve spent a lot of time in the last year in a half focusing on block techniques, trying to be aggressive at the net,” Clifton said.  “Shay is 6-foot-2 with really long arms and is having the sense of where the play is developing and her trusting her gut, where she’s able to make a lot of plays at the net.  She finishes really strong with her hands. When she gets a block, it really fires up the team and I think she knows that.

“For her, working extra hard getting that stuff block either one-on-one or at the pin fires up the team defensively and then we feed off that.”

Hall finished the Wofford Invitational with six blocks, two solo and four block assists, in a three-set win against Alabama A&M Saturday. In the three matches during the tournament, Hall recorded 13 blocks and averaged 1.30 blocks and added seven kills.

Hall ranks second in the MEAC in blocks (0.96 per set) while Brewer ranks seventh in the conference in assists at 5.88 per set.

The Aggies return to the court Tuesday against USC Upstate for their home opener at 6 p.m. at Corbett Sports Center.
